Fostering Collaborative Problem Solving In the Department of Commerce

On June 2nd, 2016, the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) for the Department of Commerce (DOC) issued another game-changing announcement - "GitHub can be used* to collaboratively build open source software.” (*Note below for DOC users)

Exploring the Landscape of American Innovation

Throughout our country’s history, innovators have used the patent system to protect their ideas. From Samuel Hopkin's improved process in making potash, an ingredient in fertilizer in 1790, to the patents of the present day, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has evaluated and safeguarded innovation around the world.

Commerce On The Cloud

In early 2011, the Administration released the Federal Cloud Computing Strategy - that advocates the 'Cloud First' approach in order to capitalize on its cost savings, availability improvements, energy efficiencies, system agility, centralized security management and increased reliability.

Now, DOC will be able to develop, test and build products and services on the FedRAMPed Amazon Web Services platform.

As "America's Data Agency", the Department of Commerce intrinsically understands and appreciates that a 'Cloud First' strategy is critical in maximizing the power of open data in order to facilitate the conditions for economic growth and opportunity.  The Big Data Project from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Open Data efforts from the Commerce Data Service show this clearly.
