Performing the duties of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs
Justin Antonipillai serves as Counselor to U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker with delegated duties of the Undersecretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs. In this capacity, he contributes to policies and discussions on a wide range of issues including trade, manufacturing, taxation, innovation, competiveness, retirement security, immigration, and education. Mr. Antonipillai leads the Economics and Statistics Administration, which includes two of our nation's leading information agencies: the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Mr. Antonipillai joined the U.S. Commerce Department in 2013 as Deputy General Counsel. During his time, he also served as Acting General Counsel and Acting Chief of Staff. Mr. Antonipillai has played a key role in a number of the Department's top priorities, including co-leading the Commerce negotiating team on the issue of Safe Harbor, leading to the new "Data Shield" agreement with the European Commission. Prior to joining the Commerce, Mr. Antonipillai was a partner, and previously an associate, at Arnold & Porter LLP from 1997 to 2013, where he focused on civil and criminal litigation and regulatory enforcement to support the growth of United States-based companies, private equity funds, and accounting firms. During his time in private practice, Mr. Antonipillai was selected one of the "Top 40 Lawyers Under 40" by Washingtonian Magazine, and one of the "Top 40 Business People Under 40" by the Washington Business Journal. Mr. Antonipillai received his BA from Cornell University in 1994 and a law degree from American University in 1997.
